Where Hope Grows

Where Hope Grows is a powerful documentary filmed by Ruben de Kemp, shedding light on a reality that often remains unseen in one of the world’s most celebrated cities.

When people think of Cape Town, they imagine the beauty of the waterfront, world-renowned beaches, breathtaking landscapes, and a vibrant multicultural city. What many do not see, however, is another reality that exists just beyond these images.

Set in the Cape Flats near Athlone, the documentary explores the lives of women affected by domestic abuse in communities surrounded by gang violence. For many women, leaving an abusive relationship is far more complicated than it may seem. Financial dependence, fear, and the lack of safe alternatives often force survivors to return to the very environments they are trying to escape.

This is why the work of the Saartjie Baartman Centre for Women and Children is so critical. Established in response to the high levels of violence on the Cape Flats, the centre provides a 24-hour safe shelter and comprehensive support services for abused women and their children, helping them heal, rebuild their lives, and work toward independence.

Through Ruben’s lens, Where Hope Grows captures the strength, vulnerability, and resilience of women whose stories are rarely heard. With sensitivity and honesty, the film reveals a side of Cape Town that many never see — while also highlighting the vital role of organisations working every day to support survivors and restore hope.
